Loin des adaptations wokistes et volontairement déconstruites de l’œuvre fondamentale de John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, le nouvel ouvrage d’Armand Berger montre bien qu’on ne peut entrer en Terre du Milieu qu’en passant par la tradition et la longue mémoire européenne. Conscient de la nécessité vitale de transmettre aux générations qui viennent les traditions ancestrales qui ont forgé notre civilisation, l’auteur nous invite à une promenade – comme il le dit lui-même – à travers les bois et les cités de la Terre du Milieu à la rencontre de nos mythes fondateurs.
Au fil des pages de cette excursion, Armand Berger nous dévoile l’univers tolkienien, bien loin des clichés actuels, en rappelant que Tolkien, pétri des grands mythes fondateurs de la civilisation européenne, est avant tout un amoureux des langues et de leur musicalité. C’est cette passion qui le guidera à travers les lectures des Eddas, de Beowulf, de l’Iliade ou encore du Kalevala pour entamer le projet de sa vie : offrir à son pays une mythologie qui pourrait s’inscrire dans la longue mémoire européenne. L’auteur montre ainsi comment Tolkien reprend des topos de sagas européennes, comme la figure du héros, le personnage de l’elfe, le thème de la chute ou encore le mythe de l’Atlantide pour les intégrer à son monde imaginaire qui se veut être résolument européen.
L’auteur n’oublie pas de montrer combien l’Européen qu’était Tolkien était tourné vers la nature, lui qui avait été profondément marqué par la guerre fratricide de 1914. La modernisation et l’industrialisation s’opposent, dans l’œuvre de Tolkien, au monde traditionnel issu des richesses de notre civilisation. Dans son livre, Armand Berger fait la part belle aux Hobbits et l’on devine son attachement pour ces semis-hommes créés par Tolkien et dont les actes, en Terre du Milieu, ne cesseront de surprendre les autres peuples : leur courage, leur mode de vie, leurs traditions sont mises en avant par l’auteur.
Enfin, rappelant que Tolkien se présente tout d’abord comme un traducteur de contes et de légendes, dépositaire d’une tradition tournée vers l’imaginaire, Armand Berger nous propose une réflexion percutante et nourrie sur la transmission de nos traditions, et, partant, de notre Tradition. Far away from the wokist and voluntary deconstructed adaptations of the John Ronald Reuel Tolkien’s fundamental masterpiece, the new Armand Berger’s work shows well that we can enter in the Middle-Earth only by the way of the tradition and the long European memory. Conscious of the vital need to transmit to the coming generations the ancestral traditions which forged our civilisation, the author invites us to a walk – as he says himself – through the woods and the cities of the Middle-Earth meeting our founding myths.
Over the pages of this excursion, Armand Berger unveils us the Tolkienian universe, far away from the current clichés reminding that Tolkien, steeped in the great founding myths of European civilisation, is above all in love with languages and their musicality. This passion will guide him through the lectures of the Eddas, of Beowulf, of the Iliade or even of the Kalevala to initiate the project of his life: offer to his country a mythology that could inscribe herself in the long European memory. And so, the author shows how Tolkien takes topos from European sagas, such as the figure of the hero, the character of the elf, the theme of the fall or the myth of Atlantis and integrates them into his imaginary world which is resolutely European.
The author does not forget to show the extent to which Tolkien – the European he was – was turned towards Nature, having been deeply marked by the fratricidal war of 1914. Criticism of modernisation, of the industrialisation of the world, which is opposed, in the Tolkien’s work, to a traditional world born of the riches of our civilisation. In his book, Armand Berger gives pride of place to the Hobbits, and we can guess his attachment to these half-humans created by Tolkien and whose actions, in Middle-Earth, will never cease to surprise other peoples: their courage, their way of life and their traditions are highlighted by the author.
Finally, recalling that Tolkien presents himself first and foremost as a translator of tales and legends, repository of a tradition turned towards the imaginary, Armand Berger offers us a forceful and nourishing reflection about the transmission of our traditions, and therefore of our Tradition. The link between the Middle-Earth and our world is done, and we leave the path proposed by the author with a renewed awareness of the profoundly mythical character of the work of this “Anglo-Saxon bard”, which should be maintained and passed on as one of the links which did the chain of our civilisation.
